Benoit says: You can get an idea by looking at the grass how strong the wind was. I'm guessing about 30 knots. It would have been impossible to go the other way. However, you could impress a lot of cyclists if you did. This is not the goal of our trip.
This is pretty good training ... in order to face the winds in Patagonia. Your random walk will eventually lead you there, and you'll love it. I'm impressed to read that you could cycle at all in that wind.
